Insulin resistance
Insulin resistance is a condition in which a normal amount of insulin causes an inadequate decrease in blood glucose levels.
What is it?
The pancreas produces insulin in response to glucose in the blood. As the pancreas is forced to release more insulin to reduce blood sugar in cells, cells stop responding to all that insulin over time. The cells become insulin resistant. As the blood sugar continues to rise, the pancreas continues to produce more and more insulin. However, once the cells become insulin resistant, it becomes a losing battle. The dog becomes diabetic.
Clinical Signs?
Clinical signs include increased thirst or hunger, frequent urination, lethargy, frequent infections, and evidence of high blood sugar levels in blood work and urine.
