As dog parents become more aware of their dog's nutritional requirements, they also realize that they must make better choices for their dog's meals. The negative impact of poor nutrition on dogs includes a drastic increase in obesity, diabetes, cancer, and many other ailments. The ketogenic diet is popular among people and is utilized in dogs for weight loss and prevention of other diet-related conditions.

Changes in a dog's diet can significantly benefit its health and well-being. This article will focus on one specific change: the ketogenic diet option. 

Simply put, a ketogenic diet is high in fat, with moderate levels of high-quality protein and low levels of carbohydrates. When fed a ketogenic diet, a dog's body breaks down fat into molecules called ketones, which are circulated in the blood and become the primary energy source for many cells in the body. The goal of feeding a dog a ketogenic diet is to allow its body to burn fat instead of carbohydrates for energy. 

The standard ketogenic diet will comprise a 1:1 to 2:1 ratio of healthy fats to high-quality protein, depending on how the dog tolerates the higher fat content. The dog's body will produce energy from fat-derived ketone bodies rather than glucose from sugar and carbohydrates (as in a kibble diet). 

The ketogenic diet is a species-appropriate diet for dogs as it is the natural diet for their direct ancestor, the wolf. Providing a dog with real whole foods such as raw meaty bones, organ meats, seafood, and muscle meat allows the body to form the ketones for energy. 

Ketosis is a metabolic state in which the body uses fat as a primary energy source instead of carbohydrates. This metabolic shift occurs when the intake of carbohydrates, typically broken down into glucose and used as the body's primary energy source, is significantly reduced. Ketosis boosts metabolism, increasing fat burning and muscle toning. 

When carbohydrates are limited in the diet, the body's glycogen stores (stored glucose) become depleted. Without sufficient glucose, the body switches to using fat for energy. Fatty acids from dietary fat and stored body fat are broken down into molecules called ketones in the liver through a process called ketogenesis.

Ketones become an alternative fuel source for the brain and tissues that rely on glucose. As ketone levels in the bloodstream increase, the body enters a state of ketosis. Ketosis is characterized by elevated levels of ketones and reduced levels of circulating glucose.

Ketosis can occur during periods of fasting or extended periods without food intake. The body's glycogen stores are depleted without dietary carbohydrates, producing ketone.

Ketosis should not be confused with Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA), a life-threatening condition in dogs with uncontrolled Type 1 diabetes. DKA results in ketone levels can become dangerously high, leading to a condition called ketoacidosis.

The basis of a raw diet for dogs is to provide whole, fresh food that is species-appropriate. There are three primary raw diet models: the Prey Model Raw (PMR), the Biologically Appropriate Raw Food (BARF), and the Ancestral Raw Diet. These three diets may be considered ketogenic because they do not include processed carbohydrates, only fruits and vegetables. Because they do not contain processed food, they are also ideal for weight control in dogs.

The PMR diet mimics the feeding style of wild canids as it is based on feeding whole prey, including fur or feathers, blood, and all organs, along with muscle meat, and bones. Ideally, whole wild prey is utilized; however, domestic prey animals are often used because it is difficult to source wild prey. Common domesticated animals fed include whole rabbits, ducks, chickens, and quail. Utilizing parts of different animals, known as Frankenprey, is commonly done because it is often challenging to source whole animals.

PMR diets generally do not include plant materials or dairy products.

BARF is a raw food diet for dogs that consists of raw muscle meat and raw meaty bones, vegetables, and fruits. The BARF diet excluded all processed foods. Some dog parents refer to this diet as Bones and Raw Food Diet.

Although very close to an actual ketogenic diet, with the addition of vegetables and fruits as a fiber source, the BARF diet is not a true ketogenic diet. However, it is still a species-appropriate diet, as wolves consume some vegetation from the stomach contents of their prey.

The traditional Ancestral Diet is sometimes called the Primordial Diet, initially coined by Steve Brown. The Real  Ancestral 6X DietTM,  created by Real Dog Box, is similar to the BARF diet, except for adding fur or feathers rather than just fruit and vegetables as fiber sources. The ancestral diet emphasizes the importance of protein variety, recommending using at least four different forms of protein per month. Most BARF ratio diets include essential proteins (beef, chicken, turkey, and pork). In contrast, the ancestral diet includes proteins from seafood, lamb, duck, and other available species for variety, as well as the addition of seafood to compensate for imbalances in the Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids that result from meat from factory-farmed livestock.

The Real Ancestral 6X DietTM potentially contains the least amount of carbohydrates, mainly when fur and feathers are used as the fiber source.

Because the ketogenic diet contains no carbohydrates, it is often indicated for overweight or obese dogs that need to lose weight. Remember, even a dog that appears to be healthy can be harboring internal diseases or disorders. All dogs are unique. Some dogs will tolerate the transition to a ketogenic diet easily, while others may not thrive on the diet. Dog parents should always consult a veterinarian when considering a ketogenic diet for their dog.

The fundamentals of a ketogenic diet are straightforward. The majority of the calories in the diet come from animal fats. Foods such as coconut oil and whole, oily fish can be used as fat sources. Use meats naturally high in fats, such as lamb and pork, as a general guideline. Choosing cuts with more fat will help develop the proper ketogenic diet.

Aim for 90-95% high-fat meat and 5-10% green vegetable matter for dogs, with a maximum of 5% complex carbohydrates. Most meat will not meet the 20-30% fat content because they are leaner cuts. Fatty meat cuts include pork belly, pork shoulder flap, pork butt, pork jowls, beef ribeye, beef short ribs, and chicken thighs. 

When using the leaner cuts of meat, coconut oil may need to be added. Omega-3 fats (flax/fish/krill oil) and vitamin E increase the fat content. Add two tablespoons of coconut oil, 20ml Omega-3, and 1000 IU vitamin E to every 1kg of lean meat, under 20% fat.

Adding coconut oil to a dog's diet will expedite the body's entering into ketosis. The body quickly absorbs medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) in coconut oil, which go directly to the liver. The MCTs are converted into ketones, boosting ketone levels, boosting energy availability, and expediting fat decomposition.

Other benefits of coconut oil include increasing good (HDL) cholesterol in the body while lowering bad (LDL) cholesterol. As a saturated fat, coconut oil helps control hunger and prevent overeating. The lauric acid within coconut oil possesses antibiotic, antimicrobial, and antiviral properties and is anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.

Coconut oil's lauric acid is excellent for pets. The health benefits of lauric acid include antibiotic, antimicrobial, and antiviral properties. It serves as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.

However, coconut oil is a known laxative, and feeding too much can result in diarrhea. Loose or soft stool is normal when adding this to the diet. A small amount of loose stool at the beginning of adding coconut oil to the diet should not cause panic! It's essential to start with small amounts of coconut oil added to the diet and slowly increase the levels over time. If a dog experiences diarrhea, the dog parent may need to reduce the amount of coconut oil in the diet. This trial and error process may take several days to a few weeks to perfect.

Because coconut oil can be used as a laxative, start with a small amount and gradually increase it to assess your dog's tolerance. You can typically start with 1/4 teaspoon for small dogs and 1 teaspoon for larger dogs. Mix it into your dog's food or offer it as a treat. Coconut oil is calorie-dense, so it should be used in moderation, especially for dogs with weight concerns.

Transitioning from a kibble to a ketogenic diet may require a slow approach to avoid gastrointestinal distress and allow the dog's gut microbiome to adjust to the new foods. A simple start is adding raw eggs to the current food. Other kibble topper ideas here.

Observing the dog's reaction to any new food is crucial. Keeping a journal of foods introduced and how the dog reacted to them will help dog parents transition. Observing its poop is another way to monitor what is occurring in its body.
