Brachycephalic
Brachycephalic refers to dogs with a distinctive skull shape, shortened nose, and flattened face.
What It Is?
The brachycephalic feature results from selective breeding for certain physical traits, leading to a compressed upper jaw and shortened nasal passages.
Why It's Important?
While brachycephalic features can be visually appealing, they are associated with several health challenges collectively called Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS). Brachycephalic dogs face challenges such as breathing difficulties due to narrowed nostrils, elongated soft palates, small tracheas, heat, exercise intolerance, gastrointestinal issues from swallowing air, crowded teeth, and frequent snoring or sleep apnea caused by airway blockages.
Breeds impacted?
Bulldogs (e.g., English, French), Pugs, Boxers, Shih Tzus, and Boston Terriers are examples of breeds impacted.
