Atherosclerosis

Atherosclerosis in dogs is a condition in which fatty deposits, known as plaques, build up in the walls of the arteries, leading to thickening and hardening and reduced blood flow.

What It Is?

While atherosclerosis is relatively rare in dogs, it can occur, especially in those with metabolic or endocrine disorders. Early diagnosis and management are crucial for minimizing the impact of this condition.

Why It's Important?

It can cause the arteries to narrow and harden, which reduces blood flow to the heart and other organs.

Clinical signs?

Depending on which arteries are affected, dogs with atherosclerosis may show vague or non-specific clinical signs. Possible signs include weakness, lethargy, exercise intolerance, poor circulation in limbs (e.g., cold paws or difficulty walking), and neurological signs if blood flow to the brain is reduced.
