Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is a condition where the thyroid gland produces insufficient hormones.

What is it?

If your dog has hypothyroidism, her thyroid gland isn’t making enough thyroid hormone. This is usually due to thyroid problems like immune system attacks (lymphocytic thyroiditis) or degeneration of the gland for unknown reasons (idiopathic thyroid atrophy).

Clinical Signs?

Common clinical signs include weight gain, lethargy, hair loss, skin infections, and cold intolerance, all of which stem from the reduced metabolic activity associated with low thyroid hormone levels.

Advanced Clinical Signs?

If left untreated, the condition can lead to more severe complications, including heart disease, infertility, and neuromuscular issues. Neurological signs such as weakness, paralysis, and even facial nerve paralysis have been reported in dogs with hypothyroidism.
