Chemical reactions between amino acids, creatines, and sugars may occur at higher cooking temperatures, resulting in harmful compounds that can damage our dog's (and our own) DNA.

Heterocyclic amines (HCAs) are produced when protein, such as that found in red meat and fish (and kibble in many cases), is heated to temperatures around 398 degrees Fahrenheit. The heterocyclic amines are recognized carcinogens to both us and our dogs.

Creatine and amino acids (both found in meats) react with heat to produce HCAs. Over 100 different compounds are produced when organic matter (e.g., oil, gas, coal, food, etc.) is cooked at temperatures above 392 degrees F. (200 C).

The most critical thing is the temperature. The problems begin at 212 degrees Fahrenheit (100 degrees Celsius), with the most dangerous HCAs developing about 572 degrees Fahrenheit (300 C).

HCAs are on the National Institutes of Health's official list of cancer-causing agents. We've known about them since the 1970s, and they're genotoxic, which means they cause mutations, deletions, and insertions at the DNA stage. Scientists have found 17 different HCAs that can increase cancer risk so far.

We have the ideal vehicle for cancer in dogs and cats in refined pet foods. There are carcinogens to start the cancer process, as well as starch to feed the fire.

Making the body's biology inhospitable to cancer is an integrative, systematic approach to cancer prevention and treatment. 

Raw food prevents carcinogenic heterocyclic amines while still providing whole-food nutrients, including anti-cancer phytonutrients that are depleted by high-heat production. Cancer cells are deprived of their favorite food, sugar, when they are fed a low-starch diet.
