Whether you feed raw, kibble, a mixture, and treats, you likely visit the store and notice all the different brands, types, and claims on the dog food. You also probably see new brands and types coming out regularly. Although they all claim to be the best brand- most enticing, highest quality, chocked full of beneficial nutrients- all kibble types aren't created equal. 

If you choose to feed kibble, offering the best kibble is essential. Learn how to read and understand the label to know what each bag of dog food contains. It doesn't matter if the picture looks like a beautifully-placed 4-course meal. The label is where you will find out what's inside the bag.

It's important to know what's in the food you give your dog. It will give you a good idea of what your dog usually eats, and help you figure out if this food is good for your dog's health. It can be challenging to read the labels on dog food, but this lesson will help you understand what each part of your dog's food label means so you can make the best choice.

For the most part, dog food companies follow the same layout for their label. The label most often includes the following:

Guaranteed Analysis: How much of each nutrient is inside

Ingredients: Listed in order from highest to lowest weight 

The product name will be on a pet food label's most prominent printed area. The title may include a second heading that specifies which life stage for the food is intended, such as for puppies, adult dogs, or senior dogs. The ingredients listed on the front of the package must follow FDA rules for the actual percentage they are present in the product.

100% Rule-Dog food that lists that it is 100% of any ingredient must have only that ingredient—the only other ingredients allowed to be in the food are water and trace amounts of preservatives. For example, if the label reads 100% tuna, the only ingredients allowed in the food are tuna, water, and preservatives.

95% Rule-Food that follows the "95%" rule consists primarily of very few ingredients. In this example, these products have simple names such as Beef for Dogs, meaning that at least 95% of the food must be that specified ingredient, beef. With the water used for processing the food, the ingredient must still be at 70% of the total product. The label would list the key ingredient first, beef in this case, and then water, followed by other ingredients like vitamins and minerals. If there are two primary ingredients, the one listed first must be the one with the higher concentration, and the combined weight must follow the 95% rule. 

25% Rule-The 25% rule is also called the dinner rule. 25% of the product must be composed of the featured ingredients. The ingredient must still comprise at least 10% of the final product, including water used in food processing. Other names for “dinners” include platter, entree, nuggets, and formula. All of these products must follow the 25% rule. Using a product called “Chicken Dinner for Dogs,” only one-quarter of the product must be chicken, meaning that it may not be the first on the ingredient list.

3% Rule- If more than one ingredient is listed for a “dinner” product, then the sum of the named ingredients must be at least 25%, but each ingredient can comprise just 3% of the product. For example, if there is a Chicken and Fish Dinner, the combination of chicken and fish must equal 25%, but it could be 22% chicken and 3% fish. Manufacturers can also use this 3% rule by changing the wording of a product name, using the word “with.” A food labeled “Dog Food with Beef” must only have 3% beef, whereas a food labeled Beef Dog Food must be composed of 95% beef.

Flavored Rule- Although there is no specific percentage for the flavor rule, the food must contain enough of the flavor to be detected by animals trained to detect flavors. A commonly used flavoring method is applying digests to the end product. Digests are products treated with heat enzymes or acids to create concentrated flavors. Small amounts of beef are required to produce beef-flavored food and treats. Artificial flavors added to dog food and treats include smoke or bacon flavors.

Just like with human food, ingredients in pet food must be listed by weight, starting with the heaviest. If the first item on the list is a type of meat, remember that meat is mostly water—about 75% of it.

If the meat didn't have all that water, it would probably be lower on the list of ingredients. In the world of marketing, this is a sales tactic. Most dog owners will see that meat is the first ingredient and think, "This is the best because it has meat as the first ingredient," but your dog will actually eat a lot less meat than you think.

Meat meals, like chicken meal or meat and bone meal, are different because most of the water and fat have been removed. This makes the animal protein in the meal more concentrated. So, if "meal" is listed as the main ingredient, it should be at the top of the list.

Ingredient splitting is an intelligent way for commercial pet food companies to make a good ingredient stand out while making a filler ingredient less noticeable. To do this, they break up a filler ingredient into different quantities of various fillers. For example, if most of the food is fillers, but the fillers are divided into smaller parts like rice, corn, and other fillers, the fillers will be at the bottom of the ingredients list, keeping the meat at the top.

Another example involves splitting one ingredient into multiple. For instance, so that potato shows up lower on the list, it might appear more than once as potato, potato flour, potato protein, potato fiber, or some other filler ingredient broken up into separate parts.

In the United States, the manufacturer is required to provide a clear indication of the minimum quantity of nutrients contained in dog food and dog treats. This label section will be in table style, with percentages, pounds, and specific calorie counts for each component. 

This will give you an approximate range of the amount of fiber, fat, protein, and moisture. The minimum amount of crude fat, protein, or fiber found in the food is indicated by the min value beside the nutritional percentage. The maximum value denotes the full amount of moisture in the pet food. 

When shopping for dog food, it is up to you to figure out its carb content, as most pet food companies aren't transparent in this aspect. You will need to conduct some simple math to determine the amount. To find out how many carbs are in the pet food bag you're looking at, solve the following:

Protein + Fat + Moisture + Ash, then subtract 100 = Carbohydrates

The caloric statement refers to the amount of fat in the food and non-calorie-containing elements like water and fiber. 'Kilocalories per kilogram' are frequently used to describe this. The metric will fluctuate depending on product development. The calorie statement will estimate how many calories (kcal) are in each cup or serving of pet food and, assist you in determining the amount your dog needs.

Remember, this is only a guideline, and the amount you feed will vary from dog to dog. 

To be able to write "Complete & Balanced" on a dog food label, the commercial dog food is supposed to meet AAFCO guidelines. These guidelines provide minimum amounts of pet food components. Macronutrients and micronutrients are included in these guidelines.

Any commercial company that wishes to meet this guideline, will usually incorporate synthetic vitamins and minerals. AAFCO complete and balanced  requirements are rarely met through only whole foods. 

Since meeting AAFCO guidelines is being questioned by some dog food manufacturers, they are refusing to write complete and balanced. Instead, must say "for supplemental feeding only," implying that their food isn't enough to meet your dog's nutritional requirements. 

Research on your part is important to understand what the complete and balanced nutritional adequacy statement really means and if that is something you are striving to meet.

Remember that dog treat companies have to abide by the same requirements. They’re required to list ingredients, crude or guaranteed analysis and, manufacturing addresses, regardless of their business size.

When choosing which raw food to feed, check on the bioavailability of these supplements.

Some may also be required to be listed as a dog food topper rather than an actual food to be sold on the retail market since they do not meet AAFCO requirements. Although AAFCO cannot develop laws, it is still a regulating organization that many dog lovers depend on for a food to appear fulfilling. 

Some dog food manufacturers will list ingredients individually to avoid having a single ingredient appear at the top of the ingredients list. Corn, for example, is generally one of the top ingredients if it is grouped with the other corn components. 

The ingredient list on your dog's food bag may mention ground corn, corn bran, and corn gluten individually; also known as ingredient splitting. This means that instead of meat being listed as the top ingredient, corn would have been highly likely if grouped in the same category.

Something else to remember is, that just because there are 'eye-catching' words on the packing doesn't mean they're necessarily true. Many manufacturers may include words like:

Despite using these words on the package, that does not mean they are exactly what you're thinking. Dog food labeling standards are fairly lenient. Dog food is not held to the same high standards as human food. As a result, there are few restrictions governing which dog food items can and cannot include these types of descriptive terms on their labels. Do your research before concluding that what they're claiming is factual. That's not to say all of them are using these terms for marketing, there are organizations that are more concerned with health than profit.

You may also notice items on the ingredients list you wouldn’t generally perceive as harmful like Vitamin E or mixed tocopherols. These are utilized as preservatives. Rosemary is another ingredient often used to delay the oxidation of fats with the help of carnosic and rosmarinic acid.

Most companies that make dog food don't tell you everything about what's in it or how it's made. It's up to the person buying the dog food to ask the company questions to get the necessary answers.

People have trusted dog food companies to do what's best for their pets, which has led to a drop in standards. The more we ask for honesty and quality, the harder dog food companies will have to work to make their food better than what we expect.

You should also look for foods that have parts of the body or organs in them. Instead of just saying "chicken" or "beef," these companies are more specific and will say things like "chicken gizzard," "chicken liver," "beef liver," and other similar components. This makes it more likely that the product is high-quality and lowers the chance that harmful or filler by-products will be fed to our dogs.

The only way to truly know and understand what ingredients are in our dog’s food and how it’s processed is to make it ourselves. Calculating how much to feed  and what to feed is easier than most dog food companies want you to think it is. By making it yourself, you know exactly what’s going into your dog’s food bowl each day and can rest assured that there aren’t any unknown additives. 

When looking for a type of kibble, don't just look at the pretty picture used for marketing. When deciding what kind of kibble to buy for your dog, make sure to read the label and evaluate the ingredients inside the bag.

When looking for a raw food, look for actual body parts listed like heart or gizzard, not just generic names like beef or turkey.

Understand that even if meat is the first ingredient listed, it isn’t necessarily in the highest concentration, as meat is mostly comprised of water.

<b>Premium, Super-Premium, Ultra-Premium, and Gourmet</b>

These descriptors are entirely unregulated. A product labeled as super-premium is not required to contain higher-quality ingredients, improved nutrient profiles, or enhanced digestibility compared to any standard “complete and balanced” diet. These terms are marketing tools only and have no scientific or regulatory basis.

Regulation of organic pet food is evolving. According to the FDA, pet foods claiming organic status must currently comply with the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Organic Program (NOP) standards for human foods. This means that organically labeled pet foods must follow strict guidelines for ingredient sourcing, production practices, and processing. However, until pet-food–specific regulations are finalized, oversight remains limited and inconsistently enforced across states.

The term human-grade is among the most tightly regulated claims in pet food labeling. To be legitimately labeled as human-grade, every ingredient and every step of manufacturing, storage, handling, and transportation must comply with standards applicable to human-edible foods, as specified under the FDA’s Good Manufacturing Practices (21 CFR 117). This includes sourcing from facilities certified for human food production and maintaining full traceability for all ingredients. Importantly, including&nbsp; “human-grade ingredients” alone is not sufficient; the final product must also meet human-edible standards.

Despite the prevalence of these appealing marketing terms, the regulatory framework governing pet food remains relatively lenient compared to that for human food. Many label claims sound meaningful but lack oversight or are inconsistently applied. For veterinary professionals and canine nutritionists, this underscores the importance of teaching clients to evaluate the substance of a diet, nutrient profile, ingredient sourcing, processing methods, and transparency, rather than relying on marketing-driven terminology that may not reflect true quality.

At the end of the day, dog parents are the last line of defense when it comes to choosing safe, healthy food for their pets. Even though AAFCO and the FDA set basic rules for what must appear on a pet food label, those rules are minimal. Labels can make a food look healthy without telling you the whole story about ingredient quality, how it's made, or where the ingredients actually come from. That's why learning how to read labels and understanding what they leave out is one of the most essential tools a dog parent can have.
