Ginger, a commonly used spice that you probably have in your kitchen, will calm your dog’s stomach. It has been used for centuries for its health benefits, including alleviating nausea, indigestion, and motion sickness. With its natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, ginger may help your dog with pain relief. 

Ginger is a flowering plant that is widely used as both a spice and a medicinal herb. It belongs to the Zingiberaceae family, which also includes turmeric and cardamom. The underground stem of the ginger plant, known as a rhizome, is commonly used for culinary and medicinal purposes.

Ginger has a strong, pungent, and slightly spicy flavor.  It is used to add a distinctive taste to various dishes and beverages. Ginger root has been used in Chinese and Western herbal medicine and Asian and Arabic cultures for thousands of years. 

Ginger contains bioactive compounds, including gingerol, contributing to its flavor and potential health benefits. It can be used fresh, dried, powdered, or as a juice or oil. 

Ginger's ability to alleviate nausea and indigestion is its most well-known advantage. After all, that is why Ginger Ale is so popular when we are not feeling well! But there are many other benefits of ginger.

So many cancer dogs have digestive issues from the illness, and the treatments can be alleviated with ginger. If your dog is panting excessively, drooling uncontrollably, or experiencing a loss of appetite, you can try giving her a teaspoon of raw ginger.

Many of the bioactive compounds in ginger also have anti-inflammatory effects. The anti-inflammatory properties of ginger will help your dog with the pain and discomfort associated with cancer and treatments. This spice will not instantly impact painful joints and muscles, but it may help relieve the signs of pain over time.

In cancer treatments, like chemotherapy, a dog's immune system often becomes so depleted that your dog's body has a more difficult time fighting cancer. Ginger can enhance the immune system and assist with your dog’s overall well-being during cancer treatments. 

Ginger contains antioxidant phenolic compounds like gingerol, shogaol, and paradol. They help neutralize free radicals by donating electrons, thereby preventing these radicals from causing damage to cellular structures and DNA. By doing so, ginger helps reduce the risk of further DNA mutations that could contribute to cancer growth and progression. 

Your dog’s cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy, can generate free radicals as a part of their mechanism. While these treatments target cancer cells, they can also damage healthy cells. Antioxidants might help protect your dog’s healthy cells from this treatment-related damage.

As cancer suppresses the immune system, the body becomes less effective at recognizing and fighting cancer cells. Antioxidants can support immune function by protecting immune cells from oxidative damage and promoting their activity.

Because of its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune-boosting characteristics, ginger has been studied as a holistic cancer prevention and management technique. Ginger has been shown in research to reduce the growth of malignant tumors and kill malignant cells. One component, 6-gingerol, abundant in raw ginger, is the key to this cancer-fighting spice.

Ginger can also be used to reduce or eliminate nausea in dogs who are undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery.

Ginger can be found in extract or powder form, but fresh, raw ginger is the best. To prepare the ginger for your dog, first remove the skin of the root with a knife. The inside of the root is yellow, with a strong aroma released when sliced. Mince the yellow portion of the root finely. 

Dogs under 10 pounds can have 1/4 teaspoon three times per day. Dogs up to 30 pounds can be provided 1/2 teaspoon three times per day. Lastly, dogs over 30 pounds can have 3/4 of a teaspoon three times per day. 

If you would rather use dried ginger in powder form, dogs 10 pounds and under can have a small pinch added to their food. 10-20 pounds can have a little bit more, but still, be sure you can pinch the powder between your index finger and thumb. Dogs 20-50 pounds can have one teaspoon. 50-100 pound dogs can be provided two teaspoons. Dogs over 100 pounds can be provided up to 1 tablespoon, the average human dose.

To avoid dosage calculations, you can purchase ginger capsules. Each brand will have its own guidelines. But, as a general guideline, dogs under 20 pounds can have ½ of a capsule three times per day. Dogs weighing 20-100 pounds can be provided one or two capsules (dependent upon brand/ bioavailability). Dogs over 100 pounds can be given two capsules. Check the general guidelines on the supplement brand you purchase.

Be sure to stick to the recommended amounts. Too much ginger can cause diarrhea, upset stomach, bloating, and gas.

Vitamins, herbal remedies, and supplements can potentially interact with prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Tell your veterinarian about your pet's medications, including all vitamins, supplements, and herbal remedies. Ginger should be avoided in the following situations:

Do not give your dog ginger ten days before and after surgery, as it does have mild blood-thinning effects.

Do not give ginger to a dog taking aspirin or prescription anti-inflammatory medications, including Rimadyl, Metacam, Deramaxx, or Etogesic.

If your dog is on insulin, avoid ginger, which can interfere with blood sugar levels.

Do not give ginger to dogs diagnosed with gallstones or stomach ulcers.

Dogs taking heart or blood pressure medication should not consume ginger due to its tendency to reduce blood pressure. 

Ginger can offer many health benefits, from nausea relief to cancer prevention or management. 

The antioxidant properties of ginger will help your dog’s body cope with the challenges of cancer and treatments.

Although it does not provide immediate relief, ginger can help your dog with pain and discomfort throughout her battle with cancer.
