Luteolin is relatively new in the cancer field, but critical nonetheless. The research being found regarding its benefits is astonishing. You would be surprised at how significantly one compound can affect your dog's cancer growth (or lack of, in fact). 

Luteolin is a bioflavonoid present in a variety of natural plant sources, including artichokes, peanut hulls, green pepper, chrysanthemums, citrus, and many others.

In a normal body, when a cell is damaged, mutated, or otherwise unable to perform its job, it ‘commits cell suicide.’ This process is known as apoptosis. Cancer cells are different, though. In a dog who has cancer, cells do not commit suicide. Instead, they continue to grow uncontrollably throughout the body. It’s like their apoptosis switch (cell suicide switch) is turned off. 

Luteolin turns the switch back on in cancer cells causing cancer cells to commit suicide. 
Luteolin also starves cancer cells by interfering with the breakdown of sugars in the body. Cancer has a sweet tooth and sugar is it’s favorite source to gnaw on. If the cancer cells can’t break down sugar, they can’t absorb it and go hungry until they eventually die. 

In addition to the above, luteolin prevents a cancer cell’s ability to replicate its DNA which means it’s unable to multiply. This leads to lack of angiogenesis (the development of blood vessels through cancerous regions by cancer cells) and the prevention of tumors (and sometimes the reduction of tumors!). 

On top of all that, Luteolin is known to boost the effectiveness of chemotherapy and radiation. 

Mast cell tumors (MCTs) are tumors that are made up of mast cells (AKA allergy cells). Mast cell tumors are most often found in the skin as nodules or clusters, but they can also affect the spleen, liver, intestine, and bone marrow. 

Before you fully understand why luteolin is so beneficial, it's important to understand what a mast cell exactly is. Mast cells are a type of white blood cell that can be found in a variety of body tissues. Mast cells are allergy cells that help the body respond to allergens. 

Mast cells release chemicals and compounds when exposed to allergens (substances that cause allergies), a mechanism known as degranulation. 

Histamine is one of these substances. Histamine is best known for inducing itchiness, sneezing, and runny eyes and nose, which are all typical allergy symptoms. That’s why an antihistamine, like Benadryl, is necessary when your dog is experiencing allergic reactions, to reduce symptoms.

Mast cell tumors are one of the most common cancer types, and certain dog owners may be struggling with this condition being diagnosed in their furry family members. Mast cells secrete chemical signals that are involved in certain types of inflammation while they are performing their normal functions.

The body's protection mechanism includes inflammation, which is a natural part of the process. But, as with most items in abundance, more isn't always better.

Redness, swelling, itching, and burning occur when mast cells in the body secrete too much of their chemical signals. Allergies, excessive stomach acid secretion, dilated blood vessels, elevated heart rate, shock, and death are all possible side effects.
