In the wild, fur is a natural component of a canid’s diet. Wild dogs eat the fur of their prey, such as rabbits, rodents, or other small mammals. Fur is a beneficial source of fiber for dogs that aids in the digestion of food, allowing it to pass through the digestive system more efficiently—this aids in preventing constipation in dogs and reduces the risk of bloat.  

Other benefits of fur consumption include maintaining blood sugar levels, a source of vitamin B12, which aids in cognitive ability, and a source of manganese, which aids joint and ligament health. Bacillus spp., a common bacteria within the gut microbiome, produces keratinase, an enzyme that degrades keratin. The minor keratin degradation allows minimal extraction of the fur’s vitamin and mineral content, making them available to your dog. 

Although fur is found in kibble as whole animals are processed in the rendering plant, it does not have the same benefits as natural fur due to the high heat processing of the rendered materials.

Recommended sources of fiber include psyllium husk, larch, and slippery elm. The dosage for dried psyllium husk is based on feeding fiber at 5% of your dog’s meal.

Because it is a dried product, you multiply the required amount of fiber by 0.2 to account for the lack of moisture in the psyllium husk. You can then convert the amount to teaspoons (tsp) using the calculation of 6 teaspoons in a dry ounce. As per the calculations, the following would be given: 

Add ¼ teaspoon for every 10 pounds of dog. Watch your dog’s stool to determine if the amount needs to be adjusted. 

Slippery elm should be given with food. Placing it in warm water will result in a gelatinous product that can be combined with other foods. The dosage is: 

Small dogs: ¼ teaspoon three times a day

Medium dogs: ½ to ⅔ teaspoon three times a day

Large dogs: ¾ to 1 teaspoon three times a day

Fiber is broken down enzymatically by intestinal microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and protozoa but not by intrinsic mucosal digestive enzymes. These microorganisms present in the lower small and large intestines are known as anaerobes or facultative anaerobes because they can survive without oxygen. They can live by converting food into energy through fermentation.

The bacteria that inhabit the lower gastrointestinal system are similar to those that inhabit the rumen in ungulates like cows. The type of fermentable substrate influences the availability of various bacterial species. Different substrates support different microorganisms. As end products, different combinations of substrates and microbes result in various amounts of short-chain fatty acids and methane.

Although fiber is regularly included in commercial foods, it is not considered necessary for a dog's diet. Dogs do not get much energy from the typical end products of bacterial fermentation, but short-chain fatty acids are crucial for colon health.

Providing a small amount of fiber (5 percent) that contains both quickly and slowly fermentable fibers in meals for healthy pets is recommended. The efficacy of "pharmacologic dosages" of specific nutrients (fiber) in preventing chronic diseases is currently a hot topic in human and veterinary nutrition.

Obesity, diabetes, colitis, diarrhea, and constipation are a few other conditions that can benefit from adding fiber to the diet. Dogs who don't get enough fiber frequently experience loose stools or diarrhea, blocked anal glands, excessive appetite, and low energy.

If your dog is currently eating kibble, you can add fiber by topping off her dish with any of the following:

Flaxseed: High in dietary fiber and antioxidants and can improve intestinal health in your dog.

Apples: High in fiber while low in calories; also great for dental health.

Carrots: High in fiber; also beneficial to the liver and kidneys.

Green beans: Low in calories and high in fiber.

Broccoli: Easy-to-digest fiber source that contains vitamins and trace elements.

Fur and feathers: Fur and feathers are an excellent source of fiber and manganese.

There’s likely fiber in your dog’s commercial kibble from beet pulp, but this is where examining your dog’s poop comes in. If your dog’s poop is frequently runny or doesn’t seem to have a firm consistency, adding a source of fiber to its dish is recommended. 

Make sure to include a range of fiber sources in your dog's diet, whether you're home cooking or feeding them raw food. An easy way to provide adequate levels of fiber is to feed dogs whole prey with fur or feathers intact. Procuring whole unprocessed animals can be challenging. However, many commercial products in an air- or freeze-dried form meet these fiber requirements.
