Xylitol

Xylitol is a sugar alcohol commonly used as a sugar substitute in human foods and products, such as sugar-free gum, candies, peanut butter, baked goods, and some medications. While safe for humans, xylitol is highly toxic to dogs, even in small amounts, and can lead to severe, potentially life-threatening conditions.

Danger to dogs?

Xylitol is extremely dangerous for dogs, and even a small amount can cause severe health issues. Pet owners should always check ingredient labels and keep xylitol-containing products out of reach of their pets.

Additional information?

Xylitol is quickly absorbed in the bloodstream. In dogs, this causes a significant release of insulin from the pancreas. This can cause a rapid drop in blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and can be fatal if left untreated. Clinical signs of ingestion include: Vomiting Weakness or lethargy Loss of coordination (ataxia) Seizures Collapse In severe cases, liver failure or death
