Syringomyelia

Syringomyelia is a neurological condition characterized by forming a fluid-filled cavity or cyst, known as a syrinx, within the spinal cord. Over time, this abnormal cavity can expand and elongate, damaging the spinal cord and disrupting the transmission of nerve signals.

Importance in dogs?

The condition is also seen in dogs, particularly in breeds like Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, often linked to Chiari-like malformations. Clinical signs include pain, scratching at the neck, and difficulty walking. Syringomyelia requires early diagnosis and appropriate treatment to prevent progression and manage symptoms effectively.

Additional information?

As the syrinx enlarges, it can damage the spinal cord, compressing and injuring the nerve fibers that connect the brain to the rest of the body.
