Soy

Soy is a plant-based protein commonly included in dog foods and treats as an alternative or supplement to animal-based proteins.

What it is?

Derived from soybeans, it is valued for being a complete protein, meaning it contains all the essential amino acids dogs need for muscle development, tissue repair, and overall health. Soy is also rich in nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and fiber, making it a versatile ingredient in commercial dog diets.

Concerns?

90% of American soybeans are genetically modified(GMO) and have been found to contain high levels of pesticides and natural toxins. While many dogs can digest soy without issues, some may have allergies or sensitivities, leading to symptoms like itchy skin, gastrointestinal upset, or ear infections. Additionally, because soy is a typical dog allergen, pet owners should monitor their dogs for any adverse reactions when introducing it to their diet. It’s also worth noting that soy can contain phytoestrogens, compounds that mimic estrogen. Although these compounds are unlikely to harm most dogs when fed in moderation, their effects on dogs with hormonal imbalances or certain medical conditions are not fully understood.
