Parathyroid Hormone (PTH)
Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) is a hormone secreted by the parathyroid glands, which are small glands located behind the thyroid gland in the neck.
Why is it important?
PTH is critical in regulating calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood and bone. It regulates calcium by increasing its release from bones, enhancing intestinal absorption via vitamin D activation, and reducing urinary excretion. It also lowers blood phosphorus by promoting its excretion through the kidneys, maintaining essential balance for bone health, nerve function, and muscle contraction.
