Non-Essential Amino Acids
Non-essential amino acids for dogs are amino acids that their bodies can synthesize on their own from other nutrients, so they do not need to be supplied directly through the diet. While essential amino acids must come from food sources because the dog cannot produce them, non-essential amino acids are naturally produced within a dog's body under normal, healthy conditions.
What are they?
For dogs, non-essential amino acids include alanine, asparagine, aspartic acid, cysteine, glutamic acid, glutamine, glycine, proline, serine, and tyrosine.
Why we feed them?
While these amino acids are considered "non-essential" in the diet, they are still crucial for various bodily functions, including tissue repair, immune support, and overall metabolic health. In some cases, like during illness, stress, or injury, a dog's ability to produce these amino acids may be compromised, making dietary support beneficial.
How to feed?
Whole foods that contain non-essential amino acids for dogs, supporting their overall health and providing these amino acids in a natural form, include: Chicken is a rich source of glycine, alanine, and glutamine, and it also provides essential amino acids, making it a balanced protein source for dogs. Beef contains high levels of alanine, glutamic acid, and proline, which are beneficial for muscle maintenance and tissue repair. Eggs are known as complete proteins. They provide glycine, serine, and proline, among other amino acids, supporting both essential and non-essential amino acid needs. Fish (e.g., salmon, sardines) are high in glutamic acid, alanine, and glycine. They also contain omega-3 fatty acids, which have anti-inflammatory benefits. Pork contains glutamine, aspartic acid, and alanine, making it a good option for amino acid diversity. Bone Broth is an excellent source of glycine, proline, and glutamine. It supports joint health and digestion and is easily digestible for dogs. Liver and Organ Meats are high in asparagine, glycine, and glutamic acid. Organ meats also provide a high density of amino acids and other essential nutrients like iron and vitamin B12.
