Gastric lipase
Gastric lipase is an enzyme produced in the stomach that plays a key role in the digestion of fats. It specifically breaks down triglycerides (a type of fat) into smaller molecules called free fatty acids and monoglycerides, making them easier to digest and absorb in the small intestine. While most fat digestion occurs in the small intestine, gastric lipase initiates the process in the stomach.
Function?
Gastric lipase begins the breakdown of dietary fats into simpler components, especially in acidic environments like the stomach. Once the food reaches the small intestine, it helps prepare fats for further digestion by other lipases, primarily pancreatic lipase.
Additional information?
Although gastric lipase is responsible for only about 10-30% of total fat digestion, it plays an important role, especially in puppies, where it helps digest the fat content in milk.
