Essential amino acids
Essential amino acids for dogs are those that their bodies cannot produce independently and, therefore, must be obtained through their diet. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, which are critical for maintaining a dog’s overall health, supporting muscle growth, repairing tissues, and performing other vital bodily functions.
What are they??
Arginine: Supports immune system function and helps remove ammonia from the body, which is essential for detoxification. Histidine plays a role in the production of histamine, which is important for immune response and regulation of stomach acids. Isoleucine: Helps with energy regulation and muscle repair, particularly after physical activity. Leucine: Supports muscle growth and recovery and also helps regulate blood sugar levels. Lysine: Critical for growth and bone development in puppies, it helps produce antibodies and hormones. Methionine: Contains sulfur, essential for healthy skin, coat, and nails, and helps with detoxification. Phenylalanine: A precursor to neurotransmitters like dopamine, it plays a role in mood regulation and cognitive function. Threonine: Supports healthy digestion, immune function, and collagen and elastin production. Tryptophan: Important for the production of serotonin, which influences mood, sleep, and appetite. Valine: Helps maintain muscle coordination and energy balance.
How to feed??
Dogs need to get these amino acids from high-quality protein sources in their diet, such as: Meat, including chicken, beef, turkey, and lamb, is an excellent source of amino acids. Fish, including salmon, tuna, and other fish, also provide high levels of essential amino acids. Eggs are a complete protein source containing all essential amino acids. Legumes (in moderation) such as peas and lentils can provide some essential amino acids but should be balanced with animal proteins for complete nutrition.
Functions?
These amino acids are crucial for building and maintaining lean muscle mass. They help produce antibodies and enzymes necessary for a robust immune response. Essential amino acids make proteins that keep the skin and coat healthy. Amino acids provide energy and help regulate metabolism.
