Botulism
Botulism is a rare but serious illness caused by a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.
What It Is?
The toxin blocks nerve function, leading to paralysis. Dogs can contract botulism primarily by ingesting contaminated food, carrion, or animal carcasses that harbor the toxin.
Causes?
Two leading causes of botulism in dogs are ingesting contaminated food or wounds infected by spores. Dogs often ingest carrion or spoiled food, which may harbor the toxin. Rarely spores from Clostridium botulinum can enter through wounds and produce the toxin locally.
Additional info?
Dogs with botulism may show clinical signs within 12 to 36 hours after infection.
