Beta-carotene

Beta-carotene is a natural pigment and antioxidant found in many fruits and vegetables, particularly those with vibrant orange, red, or yellow colors. It belongs to a group of compounds called carotenoids, which are precursors to vitamin A.

Function?

In the body, beta-carotene can be converted into vitamin A (retinol) when needed. This conversion occurs in the small intestine and liver, where beta-carotene is transformed into an active form of vitamin A, essential for various functions like vision, immune health, and skin health.

Whole food sources?

Foods rich in beta-carotene include carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, butternut squash, apricots, cantaloupe, mangoes, spinach, kale, and other leafy greens.
