Antibiotic Resistance

Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria evolve the ability to survive the effects of antibiotics, making these medications less effective or completely ineffective in treating bacterial infections.

How is happens?

When antibiotics are used, they kill susceptible bacteria, but resistant bacteria may survive and multiply. These resistant bacteria can spread to others, making infections more challenging. Resistance can occur naturally, but it accelerates when antibiotics are used unnecessarily, such as for viral infections, or when treatment guidelines aren’t followed, like not completing a prescribed course of antibiotics.

Why It's Important?

Antibiotic resistance can lead to more difficult-to-treat infections, requiring stronger, more toxic, or more expensive medications. In some cases, resistant infections can cause severe illness or death because no effective treatments are available.
