Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs, playing a central role in bone health and overall metabolic balance. It works hand in hand with calcium and phosphorus, two minerals responsible for building and maintaining strong bones and supporting healthy muscle and nerve function. While many mammals can naturally produce vitamin D3 in their skin through sunlight exposure, dogs have largely lost this ability over evolutionary time. As carnivores, their ancestors received all the vitamin D they needed from the organs, fat, and tissues of their prey, making sunlight-driven production unnecessary.
